Jimmy López

Jimmy López is one of Peru's most renowned young composers. He holds a Master of Music degree from the Sibelius Academy in Finland and is working towards a PhD at the University of California at Berkeley. He is currently in residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris on a '2009 GEORGES LADD PRIX DE PARIS', awarded by UC Berkeley. He has won several international awards and his works are regularly performed both at home and abroad. He is vice-president of kohoBeat ry, a non-profit music organization based in Helsinki.

His works have been performed by ensembles such as Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Lima Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra of Peru; and in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Darmstadt Music Festival, Donaueschingen Music Festival and Aspen Music Festival. He was awarded the KRANICHSTEINER MUSIKPREIS at the '2008 Darmstadt International Course for Contemporary Music' (Germany). Projects for 2010 include performances by the Arditti Quartet, Jack Quartet, Helsinki Philharmonic orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra of Chile.

MUSUQ PERU (or "New Peru" in Quechua), is a collection of four compositions by Jimmy López which is available through Filarmonika. Jimmy's music honors his Latin-American heritage while at the same time reflecting the multiculturalism and perpetual motion that shape modern life. All four works on this CD are world premiere recordings.
